Over the last couple of weeks we have put a lot of miles on the road. We’ve been traversing vast stretches of highway in between Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri and the whole width of Texas (that alone should say a lot). Along the way we’ve been making appearances at truck stops, air force bases, creative family fairs and patriotic parades! We’ve met other truckers, doctors, servicemen, tater tots, veterans, beach goers, potato lovers and everything in between. When you factor in the drive time and event schedule, we actually “work” a lot (despite everyone assuming we are volunteers… to which we respond that we would be but our boss is a terrible negotiator). And because we spend so much time with the truck, when we have free time we actually do like to go out and explore the cities and communities in which we are staying.
It would be reasonable to assume that when we kids are out at play the potato is off sulking in a parking lot all by its lonesome, withering away under a pale street light with nothing but cicadas to keep it company. But just like you were wrong about us being volunteers, you would also be wrong about this. While we get time off, the potato doesn’t. One would be hard pressed to find a time when the potato isn’t being watched, touched and occasionally tasted (yes it happens). Our boss Laura calls it the magic of the potato but sometimes I think it is just the potato’s own gravitational force sucking passersby into its orbit. Whatever the reason, it is a real thing.
Below I have compiled some of my favorite shots from just the last few weeks. Some are ones that I took while undercover walking about, and the others were submitted by fans to our Facebook wall. In Galveston alone we had about 13 pictures posted from the weekend… and that doesn’t even begin to count the ones we didn’t see on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, your dad’s flip phone and your grandma’s disposable camera. Yep, it is an incredible feat the amount of overtime the Big Idaho Potato puts in; now if I can just figure out how to switch out our paychecks…
