The new team is super excited for this year’s tour and we just wrapped up a fantastic event at the Kentucky derby. It was a first for both Phylliss, who would be quick to inform you that this event was on her bucket list and she is “Living the dream,” and myself. I’ll be the first to inform you that the Kentucky Derby with all of its magnificent beauties, unchanged traditions, and unforgettable races is definitely a must see bucket list event.

I was overly amazed at the sure beauty and grace that each horse portrayed as they entered the racing arena. Each so carefully groomed to ensure perfection as they made their way to their starting gate. Then, by the sound of the gun, they turned from beauty and grace to sure power using their eye popping muscles to propel them around the track at blazing speeds. What makes them so fast? How do they make this transformation from such a beautiful creature to sure power you ask? Well I can tell you that it comes from their diet, training, and recovery.
I’m sure you all heard something on the recent fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. To put this in a more realistic perspective of power in a humanistic sense the power that Manny brings is measured at a head turning 806 lbs. of force. Wow, I will not be stepping into the ring with Manny anytime soon!

We may never strive to be as awe inspiring as American Pharaoh from this year’s Derby winner, or bring the same knockout power as Manny Pacquiao, but we can definitely learn a little about how to unleash our inner force to becoming a healthier self. That’s why I’m here to share a little about the power of the Idaho potato.
In order for you to become a better healthier you, your diet must be on point. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are the macronutrients that our body uses to turn the fuel that we consume into the power we need each and every day. Whether that be pushing a shopping cart or picking up a pair of boxing gloves your body converts the food you eat to the fuel you use. Carbohydrates or “Carbs” have gotten a very bad rap in the recent years from the various fad diets out there, but what most professional athletes have come to understand first hand is that carbs are vital in bringing energy to our system. Potatoes are amazing in the fact that they are considered a complex carb, but bring the same characteristics as a simple carbohydrate to fuel your muscles faster that many other healthy complex carbs. What this means is that they are still a very healthy carbohydrate, so healthy that they are a certified heart healthy food by the American Heart Association.

Potatoes deliver our body much needed potassium, vitamin C & B6, Fiber, and Iron. This is very hard to find in any other delicious fruits and vegetables packed all in one medium sized 110 calorie snack. So next time you’re getting ready to hit the gym, hike your favorite spot, or even doing a little yard work. Grab yourself a potato and get ready to be Powerful!!
